I started working for Orwell Vet Group (John A Kendrick – as it was then known) in 1986 at the age of 16.
My role was a mix of nursing, cleaning and reception although I was not trained to the high standard of the qualified veterinary nurses that we have now. The practice was mixed between small animal and farm work but over the years we have moved solely into small animal work.
In 1992 I had the opportunity to work as a veterinary nurse in Australia for 4 month. I had a fantastic time dealing with cats and dogs but also kangaroos, a koala, an echidna (like a hedgehog), an emu chick and even saw the odd snake!
Whilst I was in Australia a young vet student, Charles Bagnall, spent some time at our Berners Street surgery ‘seeing practice’ as part of his training.
Towards the end of 1993 John Kendrick damaged his back and was no longer able to work as a vet, by this time Charles had qualified and so he bought the practice. James then joined him in 1995.
As the practice grew and changed my job has change as well from nursing to more of an administration role. No two days are the same and there is always a new challenge to face. Day to day my responsibilities are accounts, banking, recruitment, stock control, human resources, health & safety, PETs passports, the computer system and payroll. I also change the odd light bulb and descale the urn when necessary!
I have 2 cats – Archie and Chester. They are indoor cats, in fact I think Archie is under the impression that he is a dog really! Unfortunately my previous cat was knock over by a car and had to be put to sleep. I decided that if the two kittens I got were happy to be indoor cats then that is what I would do – you just have to see them curled up on the sofa in the conservatory to know that they are very happy to be indoor cats!
Archie was diagnosed with diabetes in September last year. He has 2 insulin injections a day, he is so used to it now that he comes to sit for me to inject him! Archie loves it when I have visitors and will usually be found curled up on or next to them. Chester is shy and generally hides upstairs until he feels it is safe to come down again.
I love to read and always have a book on the go, often it’s a crime novel. I spend quite a lot of my spare time helping with the young people at the church I attend.

I have been a qualified Veterinary Nurse for sixteen years. My areas of special interest are, anaesthesia/pain management, weight management, nutrition, rabbit welfare and the rehabilitation and release of injured hedgehogs. I am passionate about animal welfare. Last year I decided to take time off work to travel and also embark on a voluntary Veterinary Nurse placement in Africa. I have travelled extensively in Africa and wished to combine my two passions. I ended up spending the best part of a year in four areas of Tanzania and also Ethiopia. I had so many new experiences and learnt a huge amount while I was away. These experiences shaped a desire to forward my career and move into veterinary management. I have recently returned to Orwell Vet Group as Customer Care and Reception Manager.  When I am not working or travelling in Africa I love walking my Labrador called Daisy, cycling, riding my motorbike and for some strange reason, have become fascinated in geology and have started to study it!

Loving animals, me and my partner George were lucky enough to re-home Lily our 18 year old white cat in 2009. A pretty white cat with one blue and one green eye, she loves being with us wherever we are around the house or garden. Over the years I have had the pleasure of helping friends and family with their cats dogs and rabbits and also horses (both riding and looking after them). My hobbies include bike riding around the Suffolk countryside, trying to run regularly and open water swimming in the beautiful river Deben, which we also enjoy in our “canoe”. We enjoy going out for meals and love being able to enjoy local wildlife and the nature that visits our garden.

I am a cheerful animal enthusiast who enjoys spending free time working on a farm. I own many pets myself. My two dogs Paddington and Bear are both mixed breeds and love running around fields and running circles around me (literally! - I blame the border collie in one of them). I have four cats called Ben, Lily, Poppy and Holly which own the house and everything in it; they’re all very regal. Last but not least is the boss of the household, Alvin, my rabbit. He boxes the dogs on the nose and the cats think he’s a walking mop so run away in terror before he’s even close!

Hobbies and Interests - I enjoy dining out with friends. I also like visiting auctions, where I make an occasional bid! I am a member of a community choir and particularly enjoy the numerous events we sing at here in Suffolk, Essex and London, often helping to raise money for charities. Unfortunately, I no longer have pets apart from my tropical fish.

I am kept very busy looking after my menagerie of pets! I breed Italian Quails, hatching the eggs in an incubator as they are notoriously bad mothers. I have 3 bantam hens called Dolly, Binky and Lola, 3 dogs: a Jack Russell called Rio, a Chihuahua x called Stanley and a Chihuahua called Delilah. I also have a rescued guinea pig called Jason. Any spare time left after caring for all of them is spent travelling in my motorhome. I am currently studying for a Veterinary Support Assistant level 3 certificate.
